Description

An enlarged sketch of Bombur, from "The Hobbit" by J.R.R. Tolkien.
EDIT: I changed a bit the texture of the meat and the hair colour, then made Bombur look a bit more happy - and munching. Many thanks to CameronKobe for the critique!

This is absolutely wonderful--I recognised the character right away. You have worked hard to make him instantly identifiable: with that style of the beard, the trim on his outfit, the roasted animal limb in one hand the a pint in the other, as well as the rotund tummy, he could not be anyone but Bombur. I really love the warm palette and the style and depiction of the material on his tunic and trousers. I also like those rosy cheeks!

While I do genuinely like this piece (and your other work too, sir!) I have just read your recent lament regarding paucity of good critique, so here goes with some--hopefully constructive!--criticism too. I think there is too little contrast between his hair and the wooden wall in the background; I would like to see a little more "pop" in the head area. He also looks a little too thoughtful and melancholy for the character who in my view, would generally be chiefly focused on the food in his hand rather than the thoughts in his head. I'm also not sure about the use of the same pattern for the clothes as for the meat...I would have expected those things to have different textures.

Overall, I genuinely do like this piece and think it has lovely energy, well-executed pose, great atmosphere, and is also extremely well drawn. You have done good work here.
